This Black History Month, we recognize that the legacy and achievements of Black and African American communities has historically and continues to go unrecognized. Black History Month (and beyond that) is a necessary time to not only learn about and celebrate all that this community has created and accomplished; it is also important to create intentional space for anti-racist conversations.
Girl Scouts River Valleys deeply values and celebrates the diversity across our movement. We invite you and your Girl Scout to learn more about the African American and Black communities here in Minnesota and across the country. Watch Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. CEO, Judith Battey as she kicks off the celebration with a short video.
What is Black History Month and Why Do We Celebrate?
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements and contributions of the African American and Black communities—a time (though not the only time!) for emphasizing the central role of this varied community throughout U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Learn more about Black History Month.
Heritage month celebrations are important in providing the space to teach, learn, and appreciate the cultural richness of the communities they represent within the wider American narrative.
Girl Scouts of the USA has released a new patch program and we invite you to check it out.
How to Earn the Patch?
There are plenty of activities for you to choose from as you join the Black HistoryMonth celebration. You’ll discover and learn your way to earning a fun patch! Girl Scouts can complete a specific number of themed patch activities required for their program grade level to earn the patch. The sew-on patch can then be purchased at GirlScoutShop.org.
