Girl Scouts in our council have been up to all kinds of activities and local news outlets are definitely taking notice! We’ve rounded up recent news coverage of Girl Scouts in our council making headlines.
G.I.R.L.s (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM in Action
Girl Scout Ambassadors Hannah and Bridget took matters into their own hands by reaching out to reporters to set the record straight: Girl Scouts is for older girls too! Meanwhile, Girl Scout Ambassador Kate Yapp shared about her Girl Scout experience and the process of working toward earning her Gold Award.
The Martin County Star newspaper printed six pages featuring Martin County/Fairmont Service Unit during Girl Scout Week, including photos of troops’ activities and Highest Awards projects. Girl Scouts, volunteers, families, and community leaders celebrated World Thinking Day at Andover Elementary School. Quad Cities Community Television broadcasted highlights of the event, including interviews with Girl Scouts from Northwoods Service Unit.
Girl Scouts and STEM
KIMT3 News covered our recent Machine Masterminds event in Rochester with the National Association of Women in Construction. At the event, Brownies and Juniors got to learn from female professionals about the basics of engineering through hands-on activities, and heard from U. S. Senator Amy Klobuchar about the importance of getting women and girls involved in STEM fields.
Girl Scouts also recently worked on their STEM badges with Code42 at our Think Like a Programmer event, where over 75 Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors learned about programming by working with robots and other STEM activities. Local technology publication, Tech.MN, featured the event and our organization’s work toward closing the gender gap in STEM fields. Additionally, the Highland Villager referred to our girls as the “engineers of tomorrow,” as they created their own air-powered vehicles during Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day at St. Thomas Academy.
2018 Cookie Season
The 2018 Girl Scout Cookie Season came and went, and what a season it was! Girl Scout Ambassador, Mikayla Bode, helped answer WCCO’s Good Question: Where does the money from Girl Scout Cookies Go?
Local newspapers like River Towns (River Falls, WI) and the Red Wing Republican Eagle (Red Wing, MN) published articles that covered our girls going digital with online cookie sales. And the Savage Pacer newspaper chronicled the journey of Girl Scout Cookies, from the cupboards to customers, with a behind-the-scenes article, detailing all that goes on at our Cookie Cupboards!
Another popular news story was about our girls exercising their creativity, along with their entrepreneurial skills by sending hundreds of submissions in the form of videos, skits, and songs to Hi-Lo Diner in the hopes of having the diner purchase cookies exclusively from their troop. The public voted, and Eagan troop 56765 was selected for their creative sales pitch.
Troop 10811 celebrated Girl Scout’s 106th birthday, by sharing a Girl Scout Cookie Hot Dish Recipe on Kare 11.
