Girl Scouts River Valleys is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Raising funds for or on behalf of other organizations puts our own nonprofit status at risk. The tax regulations for this can be complicated and have negative consequences, and with Girl Scouts River Valleys’ large number of troops and broad geographical jurisdiction, it’s safer for the organization to not allow this type of fundraising.
Policy Statement
- Girl Scouts are not allowed to raise funds or ask for donations for or on behalf of other organizations when acting as official representatives of Girl Scouts (wearing uniform, sash, vest, or pins, or participating in a Girl Scout activity).
- Fundraising for another organization includes activities such as walkathons, donation collecting activities like holiday bell ringing, or any other fundraising that directly benefits another organization.
Standards
- Girl Scouts may support other organizations by:
- Collecting in-kind (goods, services, or volunteer time) donations for or on behalf of another organization such as coordinating or participating in food, clothing, or toy drives.
- Volunteering for other organizations as community service or supporting them through Take Action projects.
- Contributing a portion of their Girl Scout funds to organizations or projects they are passionate about.
- This includes Girl Scouts making donations of cookies or troop funds to organizations they support as part of the Cookie Care or Care to Share programs, which are part of the Cookie Program.
