Have an expert from the Red Cross attend your troop meeting or event to help your girls become comfortable navigating emergency situations like a house fire. Through this Disney sponsored program, girls learn about hazards, how to prepare for emergencies, and how to cope. Girls practice what they have learned and share their knowledge with friends and family. Girls receive a pillowcase to decorate and are encouraged to build their own emergency supply kits by packing essential items in a pillowcase that they can easily carry during an emergency.
Red Cross provides the facilitator, workbooks, and the materials for this hour long program. This program helps Brownies and Juniors earn steps towards their Safety Award. Juniors also earn steps towards their First Aid Badge.
This program is available in most areas throughout the River Valleys council and presentations can be customized to focus on a hazard that is important and relevant to the local community. In order to coordinate volunteers, requests for this program must be made at least four weeks in advance and are dependent upon volunteer availability. Ideal group sizes are 20 to 30 girls, so you may want to call another troop in your area and get in on the fun together!
A key component of home safety is a smoke alarm. Even if you don’t participate in this event, you can have a smoke alarm installed for free by visiting www.getasmokealarm.org.
