Welcome to the first edition of In a Nutshell—our bi-weekly blog for the Snacks & Magazines Program. Whether you’ve participated in previous years, or this is your first season, we are truly grateful for your assistance in bringing this simple (yes—we do mean really simple) and fun way to get girls working on their business skills and earning rewards, while bringing in proceeds that the troop can use to fund their Girl Scout experiences. Did you know:
- The average troop earns $100 in proceeds.
- It’s only one order and one delivery for snack items—right before Thanksgiving.
- Customers love our products (and the new Caramel Apples are sure to be a hit).
Before we get started, we’d also like to say thank you for volunteering to support your Girl Scouts. None of this would be possible without you! The first day of the sale, Go Day, is September 22. Girls can join the program any time between then and October 17. You’ll receive these updates as the program continues, after all, who couldn’t use a friendly just-in-time reminder? We have a lot of information to share with you as we kick things off for the season.

Snacks & Magazines Rally
What better way to kick off the year than with a super fun rally? Your girls can join hundreds of their Girl Scout sisters at our free, virtual rally on September 14. You can watch LIVE on Facebook @GirlscoutsRV or on Youtube @GirlscoutsRV at 6:30 PM (CST). Mark your calendars, and register online to get email reminders. Make sure to submit your questions to the Como Zoo, who will be doing a Q&A with their penguin friends! Those who register will also receive an activity sheet to do during the rally via email. Share the news with your families, set up a virtual or in-person watch party, and get ready for a good time!
Looking for some simple (we told you this program is simple 😉) ideas for your first troop meeting? You can also use the Snacks & Magazines Rally Activities Guide to kick off the season with some cool and easy activities for your girls.
Troop Fall Product Manager Training
We have two quick and easy online pieces of training to help you get started in your role. The Troop Fall Product Manager Training takes about 20 minutes to complete and gives you an overview of the Snack & Magazines program. It will cover what the program is, your responsibilities, and program deadlines. The other training is in M2OS, the online system where you will manage snack orders, see online orders, enter rewards, and track finances. The brief training video will automatically start once you log in to M2OS. You’ll receive an email to register your M2OS account the week of September 13.
Fall Product Materials
Your service unit fall product manager will reach out to you with information on how/when to pick up your troop sales materials. The sales materials include:
- Snacks & Magazines Troop Guide (one per troop)
- Girl Materials (one per girl)
- Snack order card
- Snacks & Magazines Family Guide
If you need more materials, connect with your Service Unit Fall Product Manager. You can also download materials from our Troop Fall Product Manager Resources page. (Order cards will be available on Go Day.) Need help connecting with your Service Unit Fall Product Manager? Contact us!
Icebreaker Instant Rewards
Drumroll, please….. it’s just about time to break the ice! Girls have the chance to earn our Icebreaker Instant Rewards this season. It’s a super cool tech/water bottle sticker that we’ll send right to their home in October. It’s as easy as 1-2-3 to be an Icebreaker:
- Girls launch their online account in M2OS and create their avatar.
- Send 15 emails to friends and family through M2OS between September 22 (Go Day) – September 29.
- Earn the reward!
Each girl that earns the Icebreaker Instant Reward will also be entered into a drawing to win some super cool prizes, including an extra-large Piper the Penguin Plush!
Snacks & Magazines Family Responsibility and Permission Form
Direct families to the Snacks & Magazines Family Responsibility Form as you connect with them to pick up program materials. Before completing the form, remind families of the troop number and your preferred email address. You’ll receive an email to alert you of new form submissions.
Here’s a sample message you can send to the families in your troop:
“Hello! It’s time for the annual Snacks & Magazines sale for Girl Scouts! Connect with me to pick up your sales materials before the program begins on September 22. You can also check out the Selling Resources for more helpful information. You can register your girl’s online account in M2OS starting on Go Day, September 22. Plus, your girl can earn the Icebreaker Instant Reward tech/water bottle sticker for sending 15 emails to friends and family between Go Day and September 29. You need to complete the online Snacks & Magazines Family Responsibility and Permission Form before your girl can participate in the program. Our troop number is
[XXXXX]. When completing the form, use the email address
[Insert preferred email address)] to ensure I receive an email copy of your form. If you have any questions or need help filling out the form, let me know. Thanks for helping to support our troop as we begin the new Girl Scout year.”
Service Unit Fall Product Manager Training
The Service Unit Fall Product Manager Training is up and running! The training complements your Service Unit Snacks & Magazines Guide and only takes 20 minutes to complete. Check it out for an overview of your role and responsibilities as you lead the troops in this fast, easy, and fun program.
Snacks & Magazines Materials & Connecting with Troops
All service unit fall product managers who completed their yearly registration and renewed their role by August 1 were shipped the sales materials for troops and girls, along with a copy of the Service Unit Snacks & Magazines Guide. If no service unit fall product manager was in place, then the shipments were sent to the service unit manager.
Missing your shipment? Contact us to track it down. If you need additional materials, complete the Fall Product Materials Request Form to request added supplies.
Don’t forget to reach out to troops to promote the opportunity to participate and to inform them of when and where they can pick up their materials. Here is a sample email you can send introducing your troops to the program or post on your service unit’s social media:
“As you may know, Girl Scouts River Valleys’ Fall Snacks & Magazines program will start on September 22! This friends and family sale of snack items and magazines is a quick and easy way for troops and girls to earn proceeds early and practice their skills before cookie season! This season even features the chance for girls to earn the Icebreaker instant rewards sticker for setting up their account and sending emails quickly! You can pick up your sales materials from me at
[Insert place/time]. You can preview the materials, complete online training, and check out additional Troop Fall Product Manager Resources. Feel free to also reach out to me with any questions you might have about the program.”
Service Unit Proceeds
Service units have the chance to earn proceeds during Snacks & Magazines for encouraging girls and troops to participate! Service units can earn $5 per girl that sells 25 items online of snacks and/or magazines, up to a maximum of $300. Inform troops of the opportunity to earn these proceeds and ask them to encourage girls to set up and launch their online account once the program begins.
