We’re officially two weeks into spring (fingers crossed that the spring-like weather quickly follows) and part of springtime here at Girl Scouts is Early Bird.
What’s Early Bird?
I’m glad you asked! Early Bird season is a chance for Girl Scouts River Valleys members—girls, troop leaders, volunteers, and families—to register their membership for the 2018–2019 year. This year, our Early Bird registration season starts on April 1 and lasts until May 31.
Why should I already register for next year?
Another great question—keep ‘em coming! You might be wondering, “I’m just starting to think about wrapping up the current Girl Scout year!” Fall might seem like a long (long) time away, but it’ll be here sooner than you think. Registering for another year now means you don’t have to worry about checking off another task on your to-do list come fall. Plus, remember the Girl Scout motto—be prepared! Chat with your girls and families now to find out who’s going to be returning next year. Then, figure out who’s going to complete the registration process—your individual families, or will you (or your co-leader) register everyone? (Psst—we have handy step-by-step instructions on how to register your troop for troop leaders and families, and you can certainly use troop proceeds for girls and adult memberships.)
Do I get anything for registering now?
My answer? A resounding YES! This year, all Early Birds will receive the exclusive 2019 Early Bird patch and a Girl Scout Shop discount card! Troops who register at least half of the number of girls in their troop (half is based on the number of girls as of March 16) and at least one troop leader will be entered for a chance to win exclusive Girl Scout experiences and benefits that you can’t get any other way! Benefits you could win include free memberships for 2019 (we’ll reimburse your troop up to 14 memberships!), a “cookie booth fast pass” for priority cookie booth selections for the 2019 cookie sale, a troop photo shoot, and so much more! Plus, troops will have an opportunity to win—my personal top pick—a visit from our CEO Tish Bolger who will perform a magic show. (We here at Girl Scouts River Valleys have seen these sleight-of-hand tricks and amazing acts up close, and now you can too!) Perhaps the biggest benefit—if you qualify as an Early Bird troop by May 31, you’ll complete step one toward your troop earning an additional $0.10 per package for the 2019 Cookie Program (details announced in June). Learn more about Early Bird troop qualifications and benefits here.
And, finally, who can resist this year’s Early Bird mascot, the black-capped chickadee? (I challenge you to sing “chick-a-dee-dee-dee” and not be in a cheery mood.)
To get your troop geared up for the Early Bird season, we’ve developed an Early Bird Activity Plan, which is filled with fun chickadee facts, games, and crafts like:
- Learn about the meanings of the chickadee’s different calls and then play a birdy spin on the classic game “Red Light, Green Light.”
- Build a bird feeder. All you need is a tin can, popsicle sticks, paint, and hot glue—you probably have all the materials at home already—and you can put one together in no time.
- Hide and seed seek. Is your memory as good as a chickadee’s? Put your spatial recall to the test!
New Girl Scout adventures are waiting, so register today and start looking forward to another year’s worth of fun!
